Psychology Definition

-By Timothy Lyons

Here are some of the psychology definitions that have been put forth. The definition of the word can change with context. For instance, if we are talking about a psychology definition in relationship to a certain behavior such as purchasing then perhaps we could define psychology as the study of why people purchase a particular item. If on the other hand we are talking about how a person feels then the definition of psychology might be more in line with the study of emotions and the actions that proceed them.

The definition can also change with the theory that is being used. If I am a behaviorist then I might give the definition of psychology as the study of why a person does what they do and what purpose the behavior serves. If I am a cognitive psychologist, I might give the definition of psychology as the study of thoughts and feelings. I really like to see psychology as just – why, the question I have been asking since I was a child.
